My 98 K1500 4x4 will not start IF the volt gauge does'nt power up. It turns over but wont start. Also gas gauge is twitching all over.
Check that big red wire that runs from the battery to the power distribution box, if it is corroded internally or at the post that could be most of your problem.
That unfortunatly was not it. The wire had some corrosion and after cleaning it still didn't work. This is an intermitent problem as it sometimes starts right up. I've run several schematics off the GMTruckCentral.com web site and feel it is somewhere in a relay or sensor, Any thoughts? Thanks in advance
Did you check the wire under the box as well? Then there's always the ignition switch, big problem there even if your rig isn't in the recall. Then there are the ground pathways. Never heard of a relay causing a fuel gauge problem there is an ignition relay in the distribution box.
I've checked the ground pathways and they seem to check out. I replaced a fuel pump about a year ago and have replaced the FP relay as well. I pulled the instrament cluster and cleaned the contacts on the mylar strip. If the volt meter doesn't power up, it just won't start.I havn't checked the ignition switch yet as I'm not sure how to take it and the tumbler apart yet.
Once you get the column covers off you can see the switch is attached by bolts and a pawl engages it from the tumblers so you won't have to disassemble the tumbler unit. Switches run from around 90 to 110 bucks depending on where you buy it, stay away from dealer parts, they are too expensive and I'm not convinced they have cured the problem with stock switches.
