mis-adjustment of the brake switch. easy just rotate the barrel until the light goes off, and cinch the bolt down

starts the car but wont turn over...seems contradictory....not really understanding this part. please re-iterate for us greasemonkey chimps.

the van starts but won't shift out of park when parking brake lite is on,brake is not engaged. also won't shut off.

I'd get a NEW battery as five years old is the time to replace them because newer generation (no LEAD), but tin/antimony last only five years before they make life hard for the alternator...then take a wirebrush and undo the black 1/0 battery cable connection to the chassis/frame...clean the lug,,,,clean the territory where it bolts with a wirebrush and bolt them together~ good reliable ground will make it all work again~
