my 1994 ford escort is hard starting like timing ism off but will start . dies 15 - 20 min after runing . could timing be off or am i losing compression

The timing is set by the PCM and cannot be changed. If this is a 1600 Zetec engine, it could be one othe the engines that needed a Mod to one of the oil channels between the cylinder block and the Cylinder head. Check also the grade of engine oil you are using. Use the manufacturer recommended spec. I would contact one of the Ford Dealers as they might have some of the old service bulletins from 94/95.
