A mechanic told me that a leak in my heads is causing the temperature in my car to fluctuate, should I just have the head gasket replaced, get a new engine or change the engine and tranny ?
My 1984 runs great on the freeway 180 temp with a lot of power still but her
temp rises anywhere in between 220 & 235 at red lights. I think my engine is
still good but even after changing all of the parts of my cooling system the
temp is still unstable. Is a head gasket replacement the solution to my
problem or is there something else I need to look into. I understand a
mechanic likes to find any problems themselves is it wrong for me to try and
diagnose the problem and ask for that issue alone to be handled or should I
allow for a mechanic to triage then fix the problem which is $200 more
Your mechanic can perform a cylinder pressure test and a leak down test to determine if in fact the headgasket is the problem. estimate for a headgasket job on your car is around $2000-2500K.
