engine went dead while traveling, battery is new, gasoline 1/2 tank, won't start and when the engine stopped there is no brake why?

engine stopped while running, gasoline is 1/2 tank, battery is new, when the engine stopped, there is no brake and  pedal hard to depress, why? please advice what to do, thank you.

Power brakes use vacuum from the engine for the power assist. When the engine stops you have a reserve of one or two brake pedal applications, that's it. If the engine won't start check for spark and fuel. Spray some starting fluid down the throttle body. It should run a few seconds on that. If so, it's a fuel problem. If not it's either a no spark problem or it's jumped timing. So check for spark first if it won't run on the starting fluid. If you have spark and fuel (starting fluid) and it still won't run, do a compression test. If all cylinders test very low or zero it's jumped timing. HTH. -Jim
