I had the same problem, mine was the throttle bodies (3 ltr V6 AWD) carboned up. The garage took both off cleaned them up, and works fine now no problem. Hope this helps.

Similarly I have Alphard G model 2002. When the engine is coled down especially in the morning or having parked for about an hour, when I start it can pick up the reverse gear immediately, but the forward drive will take even more that 10minutes to minutes to engage. The mechanic have changed the gear selector yet all in vain.
