Ok form what you said I'm taking that your tranny is a manual. The reason why 3rd gear is grinding and not allowing you to engage it, is because there is damage present on the synchro ring for that gear. The purpose of the synchro ring on manual drive trannys is to allow engagement of that gear. There's really only 3 options you have replace the 3rd gear synchro, have 3rd gear rebuilt or replaced, or a tranny swap. Hope this helps.
