Timing marks on a '98 volvo s40 2.0 non-turbo

The mark on the crank lined up puts
the pistons all halfway up the bore

it should put it at top dead center. but you have to make sre that you are on the comprection stroke

Top dead center means the piston is at the top of the stroke not half way up the bore

Thanks guys. I have the head off cause it snapped the cambelt due to a faullty tensioner and after I had a look at the pistons individually I turned it back on the mark on the block side of the crank pulley. That's when I noticed the pistons at equal height
