Occassional engine/speed problem

Asked by Divya Feb 26, 2017 at 10:51 AM

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car is a 94 VW polo which I've had for less than a year.
Although it's old it's got less than 40000 miles on the
clock!

The car generally runs fine but I've noticed that if you
drive for three hours plus, very suddenly the check engine
light will come on and the car will have trouble picking up
speed. It becomes a struggle to get it over 50mph in this
mood which is a nightmare on the motorways. Sometimes
when it does this it will also judder and shake at very low
speeds and when stationary. When I finish my journey and
get out of the car, it then runs fine again on journeys until
the next time I drive continuously for over three hours.

What could be causing this? I've taken it to a few garages
all of who frustratingly say there's nothing wrong with it
but this clearly isn't the case!
