how do i test this or remove the switch behind the steering sheel on the column??

Disconnect the battery. Wait ten minutes. Remove the air bag from the steering wheel. Usually held on beneath some tabs BEHIND the steering wheel. Remove the steering wheel. Then you can access the switch assembly. You may have to remove the cowl (plastic surrounding the steering column), too. Take numerous pics so you can reinstall it all correctly.
