i have a1998 trans am ls1 5.7 and when i plug in the mass airflow sensor it kills the engine,any ideas?

Could be grounded out or completely open, is there a code for MAF voltage low or high or sensor short to ground? I take it the engine will not run with the MAF sensor plugged in at first start up. You may have to get a "live data" scanner and check the inputs and outputs of the MAF to see what is really going on.
