why do my 2001 jeep grand Cherokee start in than die

You've either got a problem with that original key or a bad SKIM module. The SKIM module is the module in the steering column that reads the transponder in the key that allows the engine to start and stay running. If the key, SKIM module and PCM don't all agree then it will start and die.
