77 ford has a solenoid on fender well, the contacts are fused closed from arcing, bang on it with a small tool

the starter switch is bad, wanting to engage when is isn't being turned...if you lead a clean life it would not engage while the motor was turning stripping the starter gear and stripping the teeth of the ring gear...we might have just caught it in time~

if the battery is old (more than five years) will stop accepting a charge anymore and needs to be replaced...perhaps yours is a 'marginal' five or more year battery?~

the solenoid issue is a problem as a result from jumping and trying to get it started n the first place, other problems still exist
