Buying from a private seller or dealer? https://www.dmv.org/me-maine/license-plates.php - says: "Maine car dealers can give you a temporary registration plate valid for 14 days when you buy a motor vehicle or trailer. Dealers may charge a fee to provide this tag." You could always trailer or tow vehicle if you don't want to deal with their DMV.
