Does anyone know if you can directly hook up an inverter
to a solar charge controllers battery terminal without
damaging anything?

A charge controller is for hooking to a battery for the solar panel to charge it. As tennisshoes posted, a solar panel generally will not make enough energy to power anything. Large solar arrays do use inverters to convert DC power to A/C so that it can be sold back to a utility company. There is lots of info at your disposal on the web to do some research.
