You have the VATS security system. The most likely failure part of these systems is the ignition lock cylinder. There's two tiny wires inside the lock cylinder that must contact the visible chip on the ignition key when you insert the key into the lock. Over time these wires wear and break. Contact is lost And the security system shuts down the car. When you replace the lock cylinder the new one comes with a template for cutting new ignition keys. BUT you must know which VATS key you have. There were 15 possibilities. Your local GM Dealer or a good locksmith will be able to tell you that. There are, of course, other components that can fail but the ignition lock cylinder is the #1 component to fail on these! HTH. -Jim
