There is a little tool that has a variable gap that can measure the arc that the coil is delivering called a spark checker, the other one requires that you put the plug in it and hook up the test wires set the compression and turn it on and press the energies button, you then can see the plug fire under compression, it's called a spark plug tester, not many places have those anymore cause it was cheaper just too replace the plugs than to pull them check them and put the good ones back in. of course if you what to live dangerously, you could but not recommended, pull off the plug wires one at a time with the engine running and see if spark nips out the end of the wire, just make sure your not grounded your you become the spark plug, older cars the bite isn't too bad but the newer stuff with the solid state coils they will hurt you, like getting tazered. I got nailed by a coil off of my Jeep Grand Cherokee with a coil over each plug, had a cracked plug lead, so I didn't know it would hit me, man my arm ached for at least 30 minutes.
