Can I buy insurance on a used 2008 Porshe that is past it's warranty? I mean insurance to cover the car if the engine, transmission etc is bad.

You are speaking of extended warranty and yes that may be an option depending on Year, Make, Model and Mileage. Do some shopping around for aftermarket extended warranty.
