Define "will not go into gear" meaning you put your foot on the brake and the lever won't move, or the lever moves to D, but car will not move?

When I bring the shifter down it will be in drive or reverse but nothing happens..I was riding ing my car for a couple hours prior to this happening and when I can to a stop light I hit the gas, the car went a couple feet then it felt like somthing released and couldn't get the car to move at all when put in any gear

So essentially, you have no power when either in drive or reverse. Sounds like your transmission has failed... You would not necessarily get a check engine light as I believe the 2003 Ford Taurus' models did not have a TCM (Transmission Control Module).
