2000 F 150. 1st gear just revs up

I have a Ford F150 4x4. 1st gear just revs up. It will
start to move the truck as long as you are on flat
ground. If you get it rolling, all the other gears are
fine. Is there anyway to fix this problem without
replacing the whole transmission?

First of all this is a automatic transmission we are talking about right ? If so check transmission fluid level and also would not hurt to change filter and fluid if have not done so already.
