just replaced starter on my 1996 bravada its makeing a griding sound what could it be

The starter may not be lining up with the flywheel.

May needs shims. joemom is right, if it does needs shims and they are not there or installed improperly the gears on starter will not engage flywheel and either 'round off' the end of gear cog or destroy both of them , on starter and flywheel.
