Taking a 97 ford Explorer out of 4 high or 4low do you have to put it in reverse

The 4HI is what they call shift on the fly, but 4 LO is not. The best thing to do when shifting into or out of 4X4 is to stop on level ground, trans in nuetral, select the mode you want, wait for the light to stay on steady, then proceed. If you are having problems with it shifting properly it could be a weak transfer case shift motor, failures are very common on these.
