The air bag light stays on in my 2008 Beetle convertible. I'm broke. is this dangerous? What would be a probable cause and a ballpark repair cost?

It means that the airbag's computer has found a problem with the airbag system. It isn't dangerous but the airbag system has been disabled and will NOT deploy, even in a collision. If you're not familiar with these systems, let a pro handle it. You can be seriously injured by poking around different components of the system. It could be a bad connection, bad clockspring, or bad impact sensor. HTH. -Jim
