my service engune kight came on  during my drive to work what is the cause

One of a hundred things. You will need to have the car scanned. How old is it? If you have a '96 or newer vehicle, you can have a local auto parts store pull the code for you for free and you can post it back here. Or you can have your mechanic do it and have it repaired.
