Air bag light is coming on in my 2003 gmc sierra and it tries to shut off while its cranked could it be my key?

Unlikely, the most common failure on these is the clockwork unit that is between the steering wheel and the steering column, but you really need to have it checked, some parts stores have this capability to check the air bag codes, but don't be surprised if they can't. You may have to go to a shop that has the proper equipment.
