Number vary widely on dealers and location. Usually on a new car a couple hundred, used cars can profit up to a few thousands.

Most new car dealerships make their money on the traded in used cars. New car prices are very competitive, but there are many people that pay near list price. Making $500 over invoice is probably a good deal for a dealership on a new car. As Tom said above, used car profit can be in the thousands.
