My 1999 ford ranger will not engauge in four wheel drive , any ideas on where to start on a fix

It is slow to into 4x4 high and will not go nto 4x4 low

If it is an electronic unit the most common failure is the transfer case shift motor, and your has the classic symptom, slow to work at first, then they just quit.
