Living in NY and buying from MA

Asked by Oct 18, 2014 at 07:19 AM

Question type: General

I have been searching for a very
specific car for months and finally
found it, but it is in Massachusetts
and I live in NY. I contacted the
dealer and they said they've never
sold a car to anyone in NY before
and don't know what to do about
registration. What do I need to do
before I go there to make sure I can
go there and buy the car and drive it
home in one trip? I don't want to
have to make the four hour drive
twice.

Make sure you have auto insurance, and the dealer will give you temporary tag to drive it back to NY. Once at home you can go to your local notary to obtain a NY license plate and pay for your registration and any taxes. I'm surprised this dealer doesn't have a clue.

Thanks for getting back to me. If the dealer doesn't have a clue, how are they going to give me a temporary registration? Can I get one from the ny dmv before I go?

If they really want to sell you the car, they will find out. Let them do the work.

Either that or they shouldn't be in business.
