Still uses electricity.

t-shoes is right on, with the exception of some very old vehicles that the speedometer and odometer are driven by a mechanical cable that spins in a sheath (like my 1976 Truck), and some oil pressure gauges that used to actually run a tube from engine to gauge with oil in it, no sending unit
