A vehicle that is able to be switched from 2WD to 4WD then 4WD Low with the flick of a switch or the movement of a lever is a true 4X4. An AWD is a vehicle that is uses all 4 wheels to drive the vehicle, most of these today use computer controls or vicious drives to accomplish this task, but there are a few out there that do have an honest 4X4 low selector lever. Hope this helped.
