The fuel filter is located in the fuel tank. In order to change it you will need to make sure the tank is as close to empty as possible. You need to then drop the tank and remove the fuel sending unit from the tank, being careful not to damage the units seal. The filter is located at the bottom of the sending unit. It is a rectangle screen. A new filter can be purchased at Auto Zone for about $22.00. On the 2002 protege 5 you do not need to drop the tank. Lift the rear seat and there is a hatch you unscrew to open and you can remove the fuel pump from there.
