What is the difference between a 6 speed and an automatic

It might be the same thing, or different. Cars are equipped with either a manual or automatic transmission. Manual you shift the gears yourself with a clutch, automatic is just that, the car automatically shifts the gears for you via a torque convertor, and some newer trans have a manual aspect to them. Both tranmissions can come in 4-6 speeds in todays cars. So when someone says a 6 speed, it can mean either transmission.
