Generally cold air intake, as the short ram tend to take air from the top back of the engine bay, where the air is hottest and thinnest.

so which ever intake choose should it depend on the weather where i live?


No get the cold air intake, the heat in the engine bay comes from the engine not the ambient temperature where you live.


Do you have a preverensce in brand? I have a 93 Mazda mx-6 and wondering what is best


To be honest it's fairly vehicle by vehicle, and most of the advertised power gains aren't accurate or reliable. If you're lucky someone has done an intake shot out for some of the products available for your car... Other than that ask on a vehicle specific forum (almost every make an model has an enthusiast site somewhere), and don't go with an overly cheap product, if the price looks too good, it probably is.

Im not a fan of cold air intakes just for the fact of rain... although they have those bypass valves, I still worry about water getting into it... I luv my short ram... lol.


cold air will give better gains because of the absence of heat soak. colder air contains more oxygen, which means more combustion, which means more power, it's pretty simple. hydro-locking your engine because of water getting into your air filter is pretty much a myth, just don't go crossing any streams:P. and there is something called a hydroshield these days, its like a bag that covers the filter which doesn't allow water to get in yet still allows air to be sucked.

a cold air intake isnt gonna give you hydrolock unless you drive through a knee high puddle. air is much easier to suck, so your filter has to be FULLY submerged to get water in the engine


the best set up is a short ram, putting the filter in an airbox thats at least 2-3 times the cc size of your engine with a cold air/ram feed going to it. thats for N/A anyway. simple open filter is much better for boosted setups as the air is precooled in an intercooler anyway


Cold air intake hands down, short ram intake like the guy upthere said usually gets hotter air from the engine area. Cheers mate


short ram would help torque more but temperature difference I would take the longer cold air intake and they sound better

Short rams are better. They create less restriction at high RPM and the only time they are sucking in hot air is in idle at a stoplight. They are easier to get to when you need to clean the filter and for the most part take up less space in the engine bay.

the only way a cold air intake is going to damage your engine is when the filter is FULLY submerged in water. partial submersion wont damage the engine cause air is easier to suck then water


unless you run a cold air feed, the short ram is always sucking in hot air. this is the reason that people replace the headlights with intake funnels on track cars, to run cold air to the filter


your still going to get water as soon as that filter is about half way submergeed, but y in the hell would drive through a puddle that is deep enough to hit the body of ou r car as your cold air should b above the groundeffects at least a half in to two inches.

you can do both by getting a functional cowl hood. forget about the near the wheel water trap cold air kits.
