suzuki samauri the rest are just too big to get into most trails

That's a subjective question based upon multiple opinions. I'd suggest that any Military Specification AWD vehicle would qualify.

I'd take a mid-70's blazer any day over a samurai. sure the samurai might be a bit smaller, but the blazer has the raw power and torque to get it anywhere a samurai can go. plus a little more weight on the drive wheels is very helpful when it comes to mud and steep hills.

if you had to drive the car other than off road im gonna say land rover there really great all rounders and hummers have become show things... they lost their amazing offroad ability...
