Why Nissan Maxima and altimas so cheap?

Because the owners drove them hard and now they have one foot in the grave
The CVT transmissions are junk. It will cost more to replace transmission than the car is worth.
They are going downhill just like everything else. I totally agree with what was stated above. Saw one guy driving like the devil was after him went trough a red light as he floored it, he made it through without hit anyone only to scatter his engine all over the road. This seems to be the normal of most Nissan drivers in my area, Audi's too.
