Need help/advice for a 2013 Kia Soul

This black stuff on the battery, could it
be the reason why the car won't start?

That is called a NOCO ring, they help keep corrosion off the battery terminals if installed correctly. However looking at the picture the terminals don't appear very clean and the battery looks old, so hookup the memory saver tool to the OBD 2 port then remove the battery and have it load tested, if it passes then clean the battery terminals so they are shiny clean, no black corrosion, then reinstall the connections and respray with NOCO spray. If you need a new battery buy new NOCO rings and spray them after the new battery is installed.

You can also put Vaseline on the terminals to prevent corrosion. Jim
