1997 Firebird Stuttering Acceleration

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

First off, I apologize for the long post, but I am detail oriented. I have a '97 V6
Firebird with 44k miles on her. Recently I have had issues with a mildly erratic
idle and stuttering acceleration. The idle usually is pretty smooth, but
randomly it will jump up to 1500 RPM or so. As for the acceleration, it is
occasionally jerky at low gears, and almost always jerky at high gears. It is
especially bad in fourth gear; the engine makes a constant low humming
which is different from all the other gears, and really struggles to pick up
speed. When I try to accelerate up hill at around 45 mph, she stutters and
jerks noticeably. A few days ago it was misfiring and the check engine light
popped on, so I took her to a mechanic who told me that the problem lies not
with the ignition system, but the fuel system. He suggested I put some
injector cleaner in the tank, which I did. It runs a little better, but still stutters
under load. Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?
