It wouldn't run at all if it broke.

I agree.If it has broken, the only thing you are to worry about is just how much damage has been done!!!What are the exact symptoms?

As they said, if your timing belt brakes, the car won't run at all. Spitting and sputtering may be caused by a number of things. Dirty or clogged fuel injectors or fuel pump, you might want to check out your spark plugs.
