the power top on m 1999 sl500 will not go up automatically ..goes down fine , but will not come back up automaticlly ..( have to put top up manually )

It may have a leak in the hydralics or an issue with the pump.

Could it be a defective switch? If you really lean on it can you make it perform...or is it a "DEAD ZONE" in the up direction...like a connecting lug has been yanked from the connector?
