check gauges light comes on and alternator stops working

replaced alternator and cleaned the connections.  It works for about 1 or 2 miles then the check gauges light comes on and the alternator stops working

As you didn't state what year you have, so I am going to assume that you have a late enough model that the computer controls the alternator, so you will need a scan tool that can "live data" so you can see the alternator output and ECM inputs.
