I need to replace the 4.7 liter engine in my 2002 Dakota. Can I substitute another engine?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The head gasket blew in my 2002 4.7 Dakota engine. These are expensive engines for some reason. Can I replace it with any other engine, preferably a hemi? If not, where can I find a replacement engine? What size engine will replace the 4.7? This Dakota is my most favorite truck I have owned. If I cannot replace the engine with a re-manufactured one I will have to buy another truck.

I'm finding the 4.7L Re-manufactured long block which is what you would want, for $3000. There are a lot of different places to order one from. Just so you know you would need to know if your motor is a 16 tooth or a 32 tooth Crank Wheel, otherwise known as a Ring Tone.

240,000 miles and the mechanic says the heads are bad also. Even if not, when you replace head gaskets on an engine that old, it increases pressure in another area, causing another gasket to fail and thereby resulting in a leak. It might even result in a mechanical failure.

I think that is the gist of what I said. Still, this is the favorite truck i have ever owned other than the 64 Ford 292 with the electric overdrive. I need an engine replacement.

A1sauce answered about a month ago I need a 02 dodge dakota 4.7l engine anyone? I know its a month late but there is a place out of portland Oregon that does a rebuilt long block for 2k plus core charge. Not sure if that will still be helpful but the website is www.epmmachineco.com. Im in the middle of tearing mine out and this will be the place i get mine from. They fix the known issues with the valve seats, some valve grinding, valve springs, some timing components and oiling issues.
