what can one do to keep the tailgate from coming open on the chevy silerado pickup we put in a new latch and it still comes open we have also talked to other people that have the same problem

we also see alot of tailgate that are tied or held shut with rope or bunjie cords

It sounds like the end latches need to be freed of any rust and lubricated if you have already replaced the handle mechanism. I've had to do this twice to my 04 so far. Its a pain in the ass but it sure beats buying new latches and handles every two years. Also check the strikers and make sure they're where they should be and aren't bent or out of place at all.
