1997 chevy silvarado wont shift out of park

Sounds like the solenoid that releases the shifter when you step on the brake pedal is stuck. Try this to get out of park. Press down on the brake pedal without putting the key in the ignition. Now, put the key in the ignition and turn the ignition one click away from you (clockwise). Shift out of park and into neutral. Now start the engine. Hope that helps! Jim
