what would cause gas to spray out by the coolent overflow bottol

Gasoline? A fuel hose, have it fixed ASAP.

The only thing over there is the purge canister for fumes from the gas tank.If you are seeing gas the canister needs changed it is bad.

Your purge valve may be stuck open causing raw fuel to be pulled up through the EVAP system. If this is an OBD I vehicle (pre-1996) it will not cause the service engine soon light to come on unless it's running rich. Then it'll set a trouble code for that. HTH. -Jim
