Something is misaligned, it may be a broken shifter cable or the little plastic connector that goes to the transmission is broken (quite common with these cars). There is a way to test if the transmission is still good but it's unsafe and I'm not going to recommend or explain the procedure due to the potential hazards. The fact that it starts when the shifter says it's in drive means there is definitely something broken. It's just a matter of figuring out what.
