What engines can I swap into a 1998 subaru outback 2.5?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This is my first foray out of the domestic truck world so I would greatly
appreciate any help. Looking for a replacement engine to put into my 1998
Subaru Legacy Outback Limited 2.5 dual cam. Are there any other engines
besides an exact match that will drop into this car? what years can I use?
Also any suggestions on places in/near Colorado to look for one?

A common swap is the EJ22 out of a 90s legacy. I believe the 95 is a 100% drop in without needing to change the ECU or anything, plus you end up with a more reliable motor than the EJ25D that is currently in your car.
