could a 96 gearbox fit into a 92 model. we have a 92 suby impreza and the gearbox is poked but finding it hard to track down a gearbox

Yes, they will fit, but make sure the final drive of the transmission matches that of your rear differential or else you will destroy the center differential of the new transmission.
