ran out of gas in ford lariat250

Asked by Apr 30, 2016 at 02:22 AM about the Ford F-250

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Put about 8 gallons of diesel in gas tank, and tried the primer button several times along with turning the key to on and off like the manual said to; but fuel pump won't. Turn on; truck sounds like it wants to turn over, but doesn't quite make it. Can you please help?

If you don't hear the fuel pump prime/pressurize the fuel system, you very well probably burned it out when you ran out of fuel. Fuel pumps don't like running without fuel, they can then overheat/burn out and suck in air.

The proper priming procedure must be followed to get it running and that information should be in the owner's manual, Also the fuel filter may or may not have to be replaced. Running a diesel out of fuel can be hard on the pump and the injectors and these items can be very expensive.

Thank you Tom, did get a lifetime pump, your right it definitely needs replacing; hopefully that will fix the problem w no other problems. KLynn

Thank you Bob, did what the manual said to do, but the Pumphrey. Did go out; hopefully the new lifetime pump will be all that's needed to fix it, Thank you again, there are still good people in this world who do care, and I am grateful
