overdrive light flashes and trans shifts hard

Asked by Dec 20, 2014 at 11:02 AM about the Ford F-250

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ford f150 2wd 300 i6, overdrive light flashes and trans shifts hard, turn overdrive switch
off and trans shifts smooth. Scanned and got codes p0171 and p0174 you can delete
codes and truck will run and shift fine for 10-20 minutes and then the light starts flashing
and trans shifts hard again. Changed fluid and filter even though fluid looked new and was
not burnt and no shavings or anything in the pan. Thank you for any help.

Those codes are related to a lean condition. It points to a dirty mass air flow sensor. The ECU is confused as to how much air is passing through the intake. I would recommend cleaning the MAF sensor and see if this clears the problem. If you say the trans. shifts okay with the codes clear, then this is probably the issue. There is a spray cleaner available at the auto parts store for cleaning the sensor. Follow the instructions as the MAF is very fragile.
