I have a 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac won't start; check gauges comes on, windshield washer fluid sprays on windshield as I turn the key. What could this be. It only does it every so often.

First thing to check is the grounds, these rigs have a lot of them and a fault on just one can cause all kinds of messed up stuff. I would recommend buying a shop manual with a good wiring diagrams and component locator, believe me it will pay for itself in just time saved as well as giving you the location of each grounding point.
